Michael Stan McDonald passed away at home in St. George, Utah, on May 24, 2019, from complications of a stroke. Michael was born in Electra, Texas, March 21, 1944, to Docia Hughrene and Howard Lee McDonald. He graduated from Electra High School, attended Midwestern State University and served in the Texas National Guard for six years.
He moved to Brigham City, Utah, to work for Morton Thiokol in 1972, where he met the love of his life, Susan Kenny Ollett. They were married in Brigham City on June 21, 1973. Michael and Susan were longtime residents of Mantua, Utah. After being laid off at Thiokol they moved to Tooele, Utah, so Mike could open a business in Salt Lake City.
Mike was a faithful member of the Church of Christ and served as song leader and teacher in the Brigham City and Tooele churches.
In 2018 he and Susan were able to retire and move to St. George, a longtime dream of Mike’s to get out of the cold. Mike was an avid fisherman and loved to golf and had many special friends in the golf community. He loved to talk to people and made friends wherever he went. He loved his animals and always had dogs, cats and horses around.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Susan, his brothers Richard Dan McDonald (his twin) and Gary Lee McDonald Sr., his nieces and nephews Lea Ellen McDonald, Corey McDonald, Gary Lee McDonald Jr., Ryan Mitchell Cragun, Anne Cragun Long, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Docia Hughrene and Howard McDonald, all his aunts and uncles, grandparents and many cousins.
Funeral services
- Graveside services for family and friends will be held in St. George on June 21 at 11 a.m. at the Pavilion at Tonaquint Cemetery, 1777 South Dixie Drive. Please wear casual clothing as it will be outdoors.
- A memorial celebration of life will be held in Wichita Falls, Texas, date pending.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at Intermountain Dixie Regional Hospital for the exceptional care Mike received and Intermountain Homecare and Hospice for the wonderful caring support they provided in Mike’s final days at home.
