October 26, 1920 – February 2, 2016

Joseph Kent Giles, age 95, a 10-year resident of St. George, Utah, passed away February 2, 2016 in the arms of his sweetheart, Joyce, while surrounded by loving family members.

Kent was born October 26, 1920 in Heber City, Utah, the ninth of twelve children born to Thomas Monroe and Martha Rachel Buys Giles. 

Kent grew up on his parents’ homestead on both sides of the upper Duchesne River at Stockmore which later became Hanna, Utah.  His family farmed and raised cattle and sheep in that beautiful valley. 

A great grandson of early Mormon pioneers, he treasured his heritage and was an active member of the Sons of Utah Pioneers.  He loved all things outdoors and was an accomplished horseman and an excellent hunter and fisherman.

Kent attended his first eight years of school with the same teacher in the Hanna one-room log school house, ninth through eleventh grades in Tabiona, and twelfth grade at Pleasant Grove High School while living with his brother-in-law and sister, Lloyd and Marvel Pace. 

He served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Central States Mission from May 1940 to May 1942.  After his release in 1942, Kent returned to live in Pleasant Grove, Utah, and worked on the construction of the Geneva Steel Plant.  While in Pleasant Grove he met Joyce Fugal.  Their relationship flourished, and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 15, 1944.  This union has produced a posterity numbering 211.  Soon afterwards they moved to Logan, Utah where Kent studied forestry and range management at the Utah State Agricultural College, now Utah State University. 

He finished his studies in 1948 and embarked on a very successful career with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for 38 years, 1948 – 1986.  He started out as assistant range manager and then worked in several other capacities over a four-year period, including field examiner, range conservationist, range manager, and assistant district manager.  In 1952 Kent was promoted to District Manager, and during the next 20 years he served as District Manager of three large districts: Murray, Utah 1952-1961, Burns, Oregon 1961-1966, and Elko, Nevada 1966-1972. 

From 1972-1975 Kent worked as a natural resource specialist on the BLM staff in Washington, DC.  He finished his career as Associate District Manager in Cedar City, Utah 1975-1986. 

His work philosophy was to do a good job in whatever the job was, have a good attitude, enjoy the work and things will work out well.  He excelled in every job he did, and he thoroughly enjoyed his career with the BLM.  

Kent retired in Cedar City in 1986, and he and Joyce lived there until 2006 when they moved to St. George to be closer to family.  

Faith in Jesus Christ and service to others have always been of utmost importance to Kent.  In the church, he has served in numerous callings, including Home Teacher, Bishop, Branch President, Stake Executive Secretary, Aaronic Priesthood/Scouting Leader, and Stake Young Men President.  Together, he and Joyce served an 18-month full-time mission as directors of the Cody, Wyoming Visitor’s Center in the Montana Billings Mission 1986-1988, another 18 months at the Multi-Regional Employment Center in Cedar City, Utah 1989-1990, and 7 years as Temple Ordinance Workers in the St. George Temple 1996-2003. 

He has also served voluntarily in many professional and community positions including President of the Kiwanis Club in Burns, Oregon, and President of the Nevada Section of the Society for Range Management.

Kent has always treated everyone he meets with kindness, respect, and unconditional love, and he has made many very close life-long friends.  Family has always been his highest priority, and his pure love has endeared him to all of his posterity.  He made sure that his family enjoyed a two-week camping vacation every summer, and his enthusiasm for the outdoors was contagious.

He knew the scientific and common names of nearly every plant in Utah, and he delighted in teaching his children and grandchildren about plants, animals, and all of the natural wonders that God has created.  Wherever they lived Kent maintained a beautiful yard for Joyce and their family to enjoy and was especially known for his exquisite flower gardens.

Kent was preceded in death by his parents, his 11 siblings, and one great granddaughter.  He left behind Joyce, his loving wife of 71 years; their eight children: Michael (Terry), Thomas (Lynda), Janet, Diane (Richard) Blodgett, Colleen (Gary) Shepherd, Joseph (Shauna), Neil (Sharon), and Janene (Kevin) Slaugh; along with 42 grandchildren (28 grand spouses); 120 great grandchildren (2 great grand spouses); three great-great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

• Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Morningside LDS 7th Ward Chapel, 879 South River Road, St. George, Utah.
• Visitations will be held Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd. and on Saturday, prior to services, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Chapel.
• Interment will be in Tonaquint Cemetery.

January 30, 1935 – February 4, 2016

Paul Dean Black passed away February 4, 2016 surrounded by his family. He was 81 years old. Paul was born in Cortez, Colorado on January 30, 1935 to Paul James Black and Martha Mae Helquist Black. Paul was the fifth of nine children. He met the love of his life, Jannett McDonald, while he was attending BYU in Provo. They were married on July 27, 1956.  In 1957 he graduated from BYU with a degree in Accounting.  After graduation they moved to Monticello Utah where he and his brothers bought Black Oil Company from their father.   

Their son Mark Duane Black was born while they lived there. After a year in Monticello they settled in Blanding, Utah and continued working with his brothers. Their daughter Michele was born while they lived in Blanding.  For most of his life he and his brothers were in the wholesale and retail gasoline business which included operating several stations in the four corners area. Later Paul sold his share of Black Oil Company to his brother and acquired the Kayenta Arizona gas station and operated it until he retired. He made many friends among the people and employees on the Navajo Reservation.  

In 1972 the family moved to Monticello where they spent the next 21 years. In 1993 he and Jannett moved to St. George, Utah to be near their daughter and family.

Paul enjoyed sitting on his patio in the early mornings. He and Jannett enjoyed watching the wild life and feeding the wild rabbits. Paul had a love for bike riding and enjoyed many rides with his grandchildren. He enjoyed reading, coin collecting, and flying small airplanes. He loved to travel. He loved to go to the movies. He enjoyed jeep club with good friends and in later years he enjoyed going in his RV with his good friends Reed and Gaylene Hurst. He loved people and was fortunate enough to have many lifelong friends.

He loved his family and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were the most important thing to him. He was extremely generous and would do anything to help someone. Paul suffered for many years with a bad back and was in a lot of pain but he never complained.

Although he will be deeply missed we know that he has returned home to be with his sweet wife “Janessa” and that is just where he wants to be.

He is survived by his son Mark Duane (Joleen) Black, Pukalani, Hawaii and his daughter Michele (James) Stewart,  Diamond Valley, Utah, 8 grandchildren , Veronica Black, Valerie (Edmond) O’Donnell, Margaret “Maggie” Black, Kristopher (Mechelle) Trujillo, Maegan (Joshua) Barnum, Ashley (Aaron) Heaton, Skylar (Kallie) Stewart, Jennafre (Davis) Anderson, 17 great grandchildren, Treven, Aidan, Chayton, Bryce, Kyrie, Asher, Elijah, Luke, Beckett, Naomi, Joaquin, Eloise, Logan,  Cella, McKinley, Fredrick “Freddie” & Edmond “Eddie” .  

He is also survived by his sisters Ann (Lloyd) Roper of Payette Idaho and Jessie Black of Meridian, Idaho.  Brother-in-laws, Rex Nielson, Blanding, Utah, Steven (Angie) McDonald , Provo Utah , Donald (Rodetta) McDonald Provo, Utah, John Madsen, Orem Utah.  Sister-in-laws Colleen Black, Sandy Utah and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers Dorman, Keith, Jim, Johnny, sisters Allie Nielson, Carolyn Black.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Rick Gullotto, Jason Olsen and Rose Castillo of Zion’s Way Hospice and wonderful staff and friends at Sterling Court. We would also like to thank Keith Shumway for his continued visits and lifelong friendship.

September 23, 1947 – February 5, 2016

Lloyd Snow Sandberg, 94, slipped peacefully into eternity February 5, 2016.  He was born August 30, 1921 in Hurricane, Utah to Chauncey and Josephine Snow Sandberg.  He married and was sealed for time and eternity to LaNorma Seegmiller September 23, 1947 in the St. George Utah Temple.

Lloyd’s life exhibited his love for God, Family, and Country.  He served an LDS Mission in the Eastern States before serving in WWII.  He graduated from Dixie College and BYU with a teaching degree and spent his career teaching business classes at Hurricane High School.  He also spent 30 years as a park ranger, first at Pipe Springs National Monument and then Zion National Park.  Lloyd and LaNorma raised their family on a small 4.5-acre farm on what was the outskirts of Hurricane. Gardening and raising animals proved to be an excellent way to instill in his posterity the importance of family and a good work ethic.

Lloyd remained faithful and true to his LDS covenants even serving as a Ward Librarian last year at age 93.  He and LaNorma enjoyed their LDS mission to Venezuela in 1989, many years serving in the St. George Temple, and their weekly institute class.  Lloyd was a proud member of the American Legion and the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. But his crowning joy was his family.  

He is survived by his beautiful bride of 68 years, LaNorma (Hurricane); children: Sharon & Guy Hinchcliff (North Ogden, UT), Curtis & Jean Sandberg (Elk Grove, CA), Susan & Bevin Johnson (Hurricane), Cindy & Kim Booth (Upton, WY), Brent & Allyson Sandberg (North Logan, UT), Jerald & Lesa Sandberg (St. George, UT), Shayne & Julie Hutchings (Apple Valley, UT); 35 grandchildren; 84 great grandchildren; and sister Elaine Adams (Parowan, UT). He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Garth Sandberg; 2 grandchildren, Mandy Johnson and Challes Sandberg; and 2 great granddaughters, Krystal Bates and Jordan Miller.

• Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the LDS Hurricane, Utah Stake Center, 677 S 700 West, Hurricane, Utah.

October 5, 1938 – February 6, 2016

Martha Hansen, 77, passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2016. Martha was born on October 5, 1938 in Columbus, Ohio to Eloise Metcalf and Ralph Atkinson.

Martha received her Undergraduate at Miami of Ohio and Master’s in Education at the University of Colorado. She was a pioneer in independent living and adult care management and ran multiple companies and assisted living communities. Twenty-one years ago Martha founded YouCan TooCan, a retail store, devoted to helping people live independently. Martha was an icon in the Denver area.

Martha is survived by her children Susan Hansen and wife Jeanne Wittry, John Hansen and wife Nicky Soupal, and Steve Hansen and wife Kari. She is also survived by siblings, Shirley, Carolyn and George. She is preceded in death by the love of her life, Chuck Henning.

October 29, 1930 – February 9, 2016

Glenna Rae Edwards Boshard passed away on February 9, 2016 at the age of 85.  Her beloved husband, Bliss was by her side.  She was born October 29, 1930 to Glenn D. Edwards and Alice Jean McNeil Edwards in Provo, Utah.  She was raised in Provo, Utah.  She married Bliss Boshard on October 20, 1951.  They had three children:  Cary, Steven and Gina.  They moved a lot with Bliss’s career.  They lived in Salt Lake City, Utah; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Denver, Colorado; Provo, Utah; and then retired to St. George, Utah.

She lived for her grandchildren.  Each and every one of them thought that she loved them the most.  And she did.

Glenna had a great testimony of the gospel.  Being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, she was able to share her talents.  Glenna, Bliss and their good friends, the Browns were called to serve in the cafeteria of the St. George LDS Temple.

Glenna was preceded in death by her father and mother; two sisters:  Betty Jean Edwards and Yvonne Harding; and one great-grandchild, Emerson J Cuff.  She is survived by her husband, Bliss Boshard; sister, Frances Bowen; children:  Cary Boshard, Steven (Pam) Boshard and Gina Boshard; grandchildren:  Jessica & Jason Ellis, Kelly Boshard, Michael Reese, Shelley & Kristopher Lange, Jenny & Taylor Eatough, Jared, Chris & Brianne, Peggy, Aimee Boshard and Jaclyn & Jonathan Cuff; and nine beloved great-grandchildren.

November 5, 1933 – January 23, 2016

Jay Bybee Campbell, age 82, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016. He was born Nov. 5, 1933, in Tropic, Utah, to Charles Delbert and Sarah Delores Bybee Campbell.

Bybee grew up in Tropic and beautiful Zion National Park. He learned the value of strong work ethics, good values, faith in God, respect for others, love of country and the joy of serving others.

Bybee graduated from Hurricane High School, where he met his sweetheart, Clidene McEntire. They were married Feb. 21, 1952. Bybee and Clidene raised seven children. 

Bybee served in the Army Branch of the military, serving at Fort Bliss, Texas, and Fort Carson, Colorado. He was in a Guided Missile Battalion.

Bybee owned and operated a service station business for 25 years. He sold cars at Newby Buick for 33 years. He loved to help his customers find the car of their dreams.

Bybee loved his family. He was an excellent provider. He enjoyed taking his family on vacations all over the United States, and he loved to take his family fishing and camping at Kolob, his piece of heaven on Earth.

Bybee was a volunteer fireman for the City of St. George for 25 years.

Bybee was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many capacities of the church, including Elder’s Quorum president; Young Men’s leader; first assistant to High Priest Quorum, Ward Missionary and Sunday School Presidency. He loved to serve others. He was Christ-like and an excellent example to everyone.

He is survived by his children, Roger (Jane) Campbell, Jaylene (TC Vick) Topham, Kathleen (Huey) Clark, Linda (Delbert) Staheli, Brenda (Brent) Wilson, Lamar (Lori) Campbell and Kay (Shannon) Campbell; fifty two grandchildren; sixty eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and siblings Geraldine Stratton, LeRoy Campbell, Ferel Campbell, LouAnn Campbell and Jack Campbell.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Clidene McEntire Campbell; his parents, Charles Delbert Campbell and Sarah Delores Campbell; sister Delrae Pollock; and five grandchildren, Sara Campbell Baker, Brecken and Brayden Felstead, Audrie Campbell and Alyssa Carling.

January 3, 1934 – February 10, 2016

Garry Heber Steck, age 82, beloved husband, loving companion and best friend of his wife, Carol Johnson Williams Steck, quietly passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at his home in St. George. Garry was born in Manti, Utah, on January 3, 1934, to Edward and Ellen Oberg Steck. He is preceded in death by both parents and a sister Colleen Heaton.

At the age of eight the Steck family moved from Sanpete County to Magna, Utah, where Garry played varsity football and participated in track. After a time in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Camp Gordon George, he attended the University of Utah. Garry enjoyed writing (fiction and non-fiction), flying airplanes, movies, music and off-roading with his wife and friends in the beautiful southern Utah wilderness areas.

He was a generous man, with a kind and loving heart. He was without guile. Garry persevered many trials and challenges in life and yet never became cynical, but instead always maintained a positive can-do attitude. He was a faithful member of the LDS Church.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Johnson Williams Steck; a son Jason Steck (Minnesota); and four stepchildren: Matthew William (Pam Giller) of Alexandria Virginia; Andrew Williams (Boulder, CO); Kelly Badianne (Jean-Jaques) of Abuja, Nigeria; and Kimberly Williams (Asheville, NC). He is also survived by a sister Virginia Shelley (Lloyd) of Cedar City, and a brother Clair Steck (Nancy) of Seaside, Oregon. He leaves behind six beautiful grandchildren, Anea, Theo, Juliette, Jacques-Cesar, Jasmaine and Margo.

Funeral Services

• A memorial service will be held Monday, Feb. 15, 2016 at noon at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff Street, St. George, Utah.
• There will be a gathering at the mortuary one hour prior to services.

August 14, 1940 – February 12, 2016

Eugene Sales Jones, Jr. passed away February 12, 2016 at the Southern Utah Veteran Home in Ivins, Utah. He was born in Houston, Texas on August 14, 1940 to Eugene S. Jones Sr. and Polly Stokes Jones.

He joined the Air Force in 1961 and was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada where he became a mechanical engineer. He took a part time job with Nevada Drive-in Theater, where he met his wife, Elna Zohner. They were married in St. George, Utah on November 10, 1962. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1970 and was sealed to Elna on November 12, 1978.

He attended Reagan High School in Houston, Texas and received his GED in the Air Force. Gene attended both the University of Nevada Las Vegas and Clark County Community College where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Law Enforcement. He is a graduate of the National Sheriff’s Institute from the University of Southern California. He attended many seminars sponsored by the FBI, the U.S. Treasury Dept. and Las Vegas Metro Police Dept., where he received special training in Bomb disposal, Riot Control, Juvenile Problems, Search and seizure laws, Drug and Narcotics Control, Handwriting Analysis, and Weapons Handling. In addition to these schools, Gene received special training in Budgeting Administration and Jail Operations from the University of Colorado and Central Missouri State University. He was policeman on the Las Vegas police force for 11 years.

He was chosen to be on the special task force known as PACE. He worked in various divisions: Detective Bureau, Vice and Narcotics, Uniform Division, and Juvenile Department. He was elected as Washington County Sheriff and served from 1978-1982. He completely modernized the department and supervised the building of the new Hall of Justice. He was an Appetizer (Deli) manager in Randall’s Grocery store, in Spring, Texas. He became an Allstate Insurance Agent in Kingwood, Texas. Gene retired from there in 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Elna; daughters, Karen (Kelly) Blake and Kimberly (Charlie) Meinkey; 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; a sister, Peggy Hicks of Austin, Texas; and a brother, Vernon (Pat) Jones of Houston, Texas.

• Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, at noon in the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff, St. George, Utah.

On Monday, February 15, 2016 the heavens rejoiced and the earth wept as Jacqueline Platt Riggs  ascended from her honored position in life to a new adventure beyond the veil.  Her heart warming smile and contagious laughter will be missed as she has touched the lives and souls of countless friends, pupils and family.

Jacque is preceded in death by her former husband, William Ralph Riggs; and her parents, Roland and Dorothy Platt.  She is survived by her children: William James “Bill” (Anita) Riggs , Allen Trent (Lisa) Riggs, her treasured daughter, Melanie Riggs; eight grandchildren and their two spouses; and two great grandchildren. She is also survived her brothers Gary (Vicky) Platt, Robert “Bob” (Larraine) Platt and Marlan (Linda) Platt.

February 13, 1932 – February 14, 2016

On the morning of February 14, 2016 our beautiful angel Wife and Mother Lois G. Gogarty passed through the veil, after several months of serious illness. She passed one day after her 84^th birthday on February 13^th (born in 1932 to Leon and Mary Pritchett in Long Beach, California).

Her husband of 64 years, W. Barney Gogarty, was by her side until she breathed her last breath. They were married for time and eternity in the LDS Salt Lake Temple on December 14, 1951 and enjoyed a lifetime together of love, friendship, church service, and learning. They raised 5 children: Laura Klaversma (David), Colleen Gogarty, Shaun Gogarty (Gloria), Kathlyn Gogarty-Baines (Dix), and Michael Gogarty (Keli). She leaves behind 19 grandchildren and their 11 spouses, as well as 17 great-grandchildren, with 3 more expected this year.

It is fitting she chose to leave on a beautiful Sunday morning. The most difficult thing for Lois these past few years, during her health issues, was to not be able to attend Church and to teach, which she loved to do. We know that she is where she can continue to love, teach, and preach of Christ.

August 8, 1971 – February 15, 2016

George Ray Hammon, Jr. age 44, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2016 in St. George, Utah. He was born on August 8, 1971 in Hildale, Utah to George Ray Hammon, Sr. and Maureen Barlow George was raised in Colorado City, Arizona. He was anxious to experience life and left home at an early age. He lived in many places and learned different trades but mining was what he loved.

George met the mother of his future children in the early 1990’s. They had five children: Trycia, Cherylee, Rosalee, Troy and Angeleta. These children were the love of his life! George always bragged about his beautiful smart and talented children and how proud he was of them. They were his everything and all that he did was for them. George also had a tender place in his heart  for all of his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed taking the kids fishing, shooting, and hanging out with them. He loved to spend New Year’s Eve with them playing games and watching the fireworks. He was a “big kid” himself. George loved all of his family dearly.

He is survived by his parents, George Ray Hammon, Sr. and Maureen Barlow Hammon (Hildale, Utah); his children: Trycia Rohbock (St. George, Utah), Cherylee Hammon, Rosalee Hammon, Troy Ray Hammon and Angeleta Hammon (Canbeds, Arizona); and many brothers and sisters.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents: Jonathan M. Hammon, Yvonne D. Hammon, Joseph Barlow and Clea B. Barlow; brother, Maurice B. Hammon; and nephew, Myron R. Hammon.

Funeral Services

• Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, at 1 p.m. in the Holm Sunday School Building, Hildale, Utah.
• A public visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 19, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. and also Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., prior to services, both held at the Holm Sunday School Building.
• Interment will take place in the Hammon Family Cemetery, Colorado City, Arizona.

August 23, 1971 – February 17, 2016

After a heroic and determined battle with leukemia, Jeremy James Green, 44, passed away February 17, 2016.  He was born in Ogden, Utah, to Rodney L. and Kathleen H. Green on August 23, 1971.

After spending his growing-up years in Layton, Utah, and graduating from Layton High School, Jeremy married his love and companion, Bobette Schneiter, on May 22, 1992, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. This was definitely a match made in heaven and they had three wonderful children.

After continued education, Jeremy and family lived in Roy, Utah, for a time and then moved to his beloved Hurricane, where he eventually established his own successful business, Ridgeline HVAC.  He was able to share his working knowledge with others by teaching briefly at Dixie College. 

Jeremy was happy for the many opportunities his town afforded him for the outdoor activities that he loved so much.  Through these activities and in other areas he taught and touched the lives of many young men. 

He loved scouting and spent many hours camping and sharing his skills.  He loved hunting and shared many fun excursions with his sons, friends and family. 

He was involved in his community and always loved participating in local events.  He made many life-long friends and helped many through his service.

Jeremy is a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He never waived from his testimony and love of his God and inspired many with his example.  He will be missed and remembered by countless.

Jeremy is survived by his devoted wife, Bobette; three children, Jessica, Cameron and Wesley; his mother and father; siblings, Jason Green, Jay (Melissa) Green and Jilynn (Jason) Parkhurst. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.  He is preceded in death by a brother, Joel Green.

• Monday, February 22, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at the Heritage LDS Chapel, 1178 South 700 West, Hurricane, Utah.
• Visitations will be held Sunday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Metcalf Hurricane Valley Mortuary, 140 N. Main Street and on Monday, prior to services, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel.
• Interment will be in the Hurricane City Cemetery.

April 10, 1926 – February 20, 2016

Colleen Jones, 89, passed away February 20, 2016 in St. George, Utah.  She was born April 10, 1926 to James Qutin Hunter and Frances Fraseer in Grantsville, Utah. She met her sweetheart Roy Jones at the Alta Ski Resort.  They were married on December 10, 1965.

Colleen enjoyed running and participated in over 60 races; including 5 milers, 10k’s, half marathons and one full marathon.  She received many trophies.

Colleen and Roy enjoyed many wonderful vacations across the globe, which included riding an elephant in India and going on cruises on the rivers in the United States.

As an active member of the LDS church, she served in the Primary, Sunday School and Relief Society.  She attended the temple frequently.

Colleen spent the last six years at the Beehive home, where she was adored by everyone.  A special thanks to Horizon Hospice and everyone at the Beehive Home.

She is survived by her husband, Roy Jones of St. George, Utah.

December 21, 1929 – February 20, 2016

Josephine Phyllis Brooks Barthlome, 86, passed away of natural causes at her home in St. George, Utah on Saturday, February 20, 2016. Phyllis was born on December 21, 1929 in St. George, Utah to Edward Parry and Jane Burgess Brooks the third of three children, Ora Call (Edgar), Eugene Parry Brooks (Noreene) and Phyllis.

She spent her youth in her beloved red hills in St. George. On May 29, 1949, she married David Keith Barthlome, from Thatcher, Idaho, and they moved back to Idaho to make their home on the family ranch. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple.

Eight children were born to this union; David Brooks Barthlome (Gail), Shauna Lee Peterson (Claude), LuAnn Grover, Toni Jane Andersen (David), Chris Keith Barthlome, Pauline Kunz, Ora Maree Eisenbarth (Gregory) and Penny Orton (Michael). She was blessed with 26 grandchildren and 59 great grandchildren.

Phyllis and Keith owned “Keith’s Department Store” in Soda Springs. Phyllis managed the store for many years, selling the store in 1997. Phyllis loved the gospel and served in many church callings. She lived a full active life, and the highlight of her life was her family. She was considerate of all people she met. She was so warm and welcoming to all friends and acquaintances. She had class.

After more than 50 cold winters on the ranch in Thatcher, Idaho, she moved back to her red hills of Utah’s Dixie. She spent her last years entertaining family from the North and spending numerous hours with her sister-in-law Noreene Brooks and her niece, Kieron. The three were inseparable. They shopped, played bingo and traveled together to Idaho for family reunions, and sisters’ weekends. They shared many pleasant dinners together, each taking turns preparing the meal. Phyllis loved and appreciated them. Her children can’t thank them enough for the joy they brought into her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998; her parents; her brother; son, Chris; son-in-law, Randy Kunz; grandson, Jarred Orr; and great grandson, JJ Boudrero.

Funeral Services

• A viewing will be held Thursday, February 25, 2016 at 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Thatcher LDS Church in Niter, Idaho.
• The family will receive visitors on Friday February 26, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
• Services will begin at 12:00 Noon all at the Thatcher LDS Church in Niter, Idaho.

March 20, 1927 — February 19, 2o16

Glen Lester Bolinder, 88, of St. George, Utah, passed away peacefully at home, Feb. 19, 2016, after a long illness.

Glen was born March 20, 1927, in Grantsville, Utah, to Lester A. and Hazel Dollie (Bates) Bolinder.

He attended schools in Grantsville, Utah. At the age of 17, Glen joined the Navy, with his parents’ permission, to be part of the WWII war effort. He was honorably discharged after the war in 1946.

Glen worked at Tooele Army Depot and several construction companies before starting his own business, Glen’s Excavating and Grading in 1962.

In addition, he was a member of the Grantsville Volunteer Fire Dept., ran the family farm and raised cattle. Glen enjoyed hunting with friends and family, was fascinated with flying and had a pilot’s license for a number of years. He also loved traveling with friends, fishing and spending time at the cabin in Scofield.

Glen was well known for his sense of humor, always telling jokes and sharing his life experiences.

He is survived by his four children; Bruce (Carolya), Cheryl (Sherrie), Garry (Stacey) and Bill; fifteen grandchildren, and many great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by parents, one brother, Stan, and three sisters, Grace, Florence and Ruth.

A special thank you for his caregivers, Nicholas, Randy, Connie, and son Bill, as well as Horizon Hospice Specialists.

Funeral Services

• The funeral service will be held at the Grantsville Deseret Peak Ward, 550 E. Durfee St. on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016, at 1 p.m., preceded by a viewing from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
• There also will be a visitation in St George the following day, Thursday, Feb. 25th, between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S Bluff St.  
• Burial to follow at Central City Cemetery in Washington County.

October 20, 1936 — February 2016

Faun Veree Rose, 79, passed away quickly from complications of a massive stroke.  Her passing was a shock and loss for all who loved her.

Faun was born October 20, 1936 in Monroe, Utah, to Charles Edward Braney and Catherine Mittie Lloyd.

She was married to Don Lindsey Gammon in Evanston, Wyoming on November 3, 1956, who later passed away in January, 1979.  She married Roland Hansen on December 29, 1984, who later passed away in May, 2003.  She later met Jerry Rose and married him on November 12, 2003 in the Saint George LDS Temple.  He passed away on April 9, 2014.

She was raised in Monroe, Utah, with three siblings: a brother, Richard; and two sisters, Doris and Rae. 

Faun and Don raised their four children in Provo, Utah.  She was a loving mother who was spunky and feisty and always loved to socialize.  She was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many callings and she was loved by many.

Faun is survived by her daughters: Jean Handley of St. George, Deon (David) Wilson of St. George and Lisa Jacobs of Arkansas; son, Jay Gammon of Elk Ridge, Utah; four granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.

• Friday, February 26, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in the Provo City Cemetery.
• A visitation will be Thursday evening, February 25, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd. St. George, Utah.

June 20, 1918 — February 20, 2016

Professor George Richards Cannon, 97, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2016.  He was born on June 20, 1918 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Hugh J. and Sarah Richards Cannon and was named after his two prominent grandfathers, George Q. Cannon and George F. Richards.

He married Lois Eriksson in 1941 and they were blessed with eight children, losing a daughter, Ann, in infancy.  Lois passed away in 2004 and George married her younger sister, Mary Eriksson, in 2009. Mary passed away on December 11, 2015.

He was a lifelong faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  George lived in Switzerland with his family from 1925 to 1928 while his dad was President of the Swiss-German Mission.

He did most of his undergraduate studies at Caltech and pursued advanced degrees at UCLA.  During the first part of World War II, he served in the U.S. Merchant Marine and was barely out of Pearl Harbor when it was attacked.

He served as chairman of several high-tech corporations and retired from California State University, Northridge with the rank of Professor Emeritus.  His life was filled with numerous unusually interesting experiences and acquaintances with many notable personalities in the Church and in the technical fields in which he worked.

He is survived by seven of his children and their spouses:  George, Hugh (Bonnie), Erik (Camille), Bob (Cheri), Chris (Tina), Laurel (Lynn Rogers), and Don (Lori).  He is survived by a brother, Max, but was preceded in death by brothers, Donald and Dean, and by a sister, Alice.  At the time of his death, George had 35 grandchildren and 73 great grandchildren.

• Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 W. St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah.

Devra Webb Gamber, 57, of St. George Utah, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2016. She was born May 10, 1958 in St. George to Richard “Dick” Duel Webb and Devora Stewart. She married Jim Albert Gamber Nov 4, 1978 in Melburn, Utah.

Devra is survived by her husband, Jim Gamber; Daughters Reyannon (husband Trevor) Brooksby and Sara-Sue (husband Matthew) Gresser; Grandchildren Bailey and Lorum Brooksby and Jessie and Jaymes Lee Gresser. She is proceeded in death by her father Richard “Dick” Duel Webb and granddaughter Tucker Dee Brooksby.

• Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 29, 2016 at 11 a.m.‎ in the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, St. George, Utah.
• Interment will take place in the Tonaquint Cemetery.
