Sept. 14, 1926 – Jan. 2, 2019

Klyde Lamar Petersen, 92, passed away on Jan. 2, 2019. He was born on Sept. 14, 1926, in Park City, Utah, to Klyde Andrew Petersen and Emma Treasa Thompson where he lived 3-4 years then the family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where his dad ran a chicken farm. Growing up, he visited cousins and relatives in Park City, Utah, almost every weekend with his mother.

He received his degree in commercial art from the University of Utah in 1950. Although a great artist, a talent passed down to some of his posterity, he spent his career as a civil engineer. He raised his families in Santa Rosa, California, and Healdsburg, California, working 32 years with the Bell Telephone Company in Santa Rosa.

In 1977 he moved his large family to American Fork, Utah, where he finished his career in engineering. However, after retiring, he worked several years in sales.

Growing up, Klyde describes he found himself and his self-esteem in the Scouting program. He loved Scouts! In high school, he joined the Sea Scout program and had a lot of fun adventures there. Because of his experiences there, in April 1944, while in high school he joined the U.S. Navy and was put to active duty in September 1944. He served on the USS Massachusetts (BB-59). He obtained radio and electrician training during that time which helped him in his engineering career.

As an adult he served in the Scouting program many times. Klyde was an avid outdoorsman. He tells many tales of his adventures as a kid with his cousin Harry in the great outdoors, scouting adventures, skiing and many bear stories from when he worked his summers at Yellowstone National Park while going to college.

He took his children on many fishing and camping adventures every year in various locations in California, Oregon and Utah, and his love for the great outdoors certainly lives on in his posterity.

In his retirement years, in St. George, Utah, (1999-2019), he picked up the golf club again, and was seen 2-3 times a month on the golf course, never to let it go until the last few months of his life when his health would not allow.

Klyde was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his faith was a large part of his life. He had many opportunities to serve in many capacities within the LDS church, however, his greatest love was in doing genealogy work. He served two genealogy missions for the LDS church, but never stopped his service at the genealogy library in St. George, Utah, until his health would no longer allow, just prior to passing.

His posterity is comforted in the fact that he has been greeted in the hereafter by those he loved and many for whom he has done a great work on this earth, and the knowledge that we will all be together again when this life’s work is done.

Klyde married Madelyn McLane in 1950 and is survived by their two children: Martin (Linda) Petersen and Jan (Rob) Whitaker, and their families. He married Marlene Esther Remmele in 1959 and is survived by their 12 children: Donna (Scott) Olpin, Delayne Jones, Dennette (Jim) Hammons, Dalynda (Bud) Larsen, David (Michelle) Petersen, Dane (Wendy) Petersen, Deone (Jay) Thornton, DeAnn (Jeff) Lee, Denell (Jason) Stratton, Daneen (Chris) Ruggles, Daniel (Challin) Petersen and Dehn (Ashley) Petersen, and their families. Klyde married Ruth Ida Blackner on July 27, 1997, adding three more children to his posterity, Larry Blackner, Dennis Blackner, and Rodney Blackner. He is survived by his wife Ruth Ida Petersen and Larry (Rosemary) Blackner, Dennis (Debbie) Blackner, Rodney (Diana) Blackner, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Klyde Andrew Petersen and Emma Treasa Thomson; his wives, Madelyn McLane and Marlene E. Remmele; his only sibling Phyllis P. Timothy, and his grandson Brandon Larsen.

His legacy certainly resides in his large family, with 17 children, 71 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.

Nov. 27, 1940 – Jan. 3, 2019

Larry Franklin Wolford, age 78, passed away after a long battle with cancer. He was born Nov. 27, 1940, in Kansas to Harry and Frida Saunders Wolford.

If you asked Larry he would tell you he was from everywhere. He joined the Navy in 1964 and served our country in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1969.

After his years in the service he spent many years working for the Montana Department of Transportation. He was deeply involved in the Montana Hope project, creating positive memories for terminally ill children. For those who could break through the layers of Larry they would find he was more compassionate and caring than he cared to show. Larry loved his two dogs, Max and Snowflake, who never left his side.

Larry is survived by his children: Larry Duane (Beth) Wolford, Karen Wolford Eckhouse, Jan Lee (Dawn) Wolford, Sonjia Lynn Wolford, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Larry was asked in his final months what he wanted his family to know about him. “I want my children to know how proud I am of them and who they have become.”

Larry is also survived by loving friends who looked out for him in his time of need: Rachel Talbot, Jewelee Humphries and Branson Gubler, and the many nurses and aides that helped Larry through the years. He would want you to know he appreciated all you did for him.

July 21, 1941 – Jan. 7, 2019

William Jerome Martin, 77, passed away on Jan. 7, 2019, from respiratory complications. He was born on July 21, 1941, in Sanford, Springvale, Maine, to William Martin and Germaine DesRochers.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Sandra. He is survived by his wife Donna Lee Martin, niece Pamela Sylvain (Greg), nephews Sam and Ben, brother-in-law Bob Lee (Mona), and their seven children, adopted Seegmiller family, Jack, Angela, Lana and Autumn, and dogs Punky and Frusty, and all of his great friends.

Bill attended school at Notre Dame Elementary, St. Ignatius and Sanford High (Maine), and  Southern Nevada Community College, Las Vegas, Nevada, where he received honors. In high school, his major hobby was car club fanatic. After graduation from high school, he entered the armed forces and served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1960-1964.

In 1969, he moved to Las Vegas where he worked in the gaming industry for 37 years. Several times he was awarded employee of the month and was loved by his co-workers.

He met and married his wife Donna Lee in Las Vegas. They shared a great companionship for 47 years. While in Las Vegas, he cultivated many close friendships which he has kept through the years.

In 2005, Bill and his wife retired to Hurricane, Utah to be close to their cabin on Kolob and to help Donna’s elderly parents. The move gave him the opportunity to get his hands in the earth. Bill loved Kolob and gardening (he was known as the Onion King). He was always gardening in season and always giving away his beautiful produce. Sharing his HOT Shakey Shakey sauce from his peppers, which he became a master of, was a joy to him.

He was also very passionate about tracking all professional sports and reading great novels.

No one had a bigger and more generous heart and has left a gigantic hole in our hearts. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Bill always had great things to say with fun quotes:  “Ace/Deuce,” “C’est la Vie” (say la vee), “The End is one, the ways are many,” “Lucky 7,” “On the slant,” “Cash never ran second,” “Thank you God for the use of the hall,” “Honest to God this is on the square,” “Mark my word.”

The night before he unexpectedly died, he said, “If I die tomorrow, I’ve lived the best life I could.” Bill passed away on the 7th, his lucky number!

At Bill’s request, he was cremated and there will be no services.

In lieu of flowers, Donna would ask that you donate to a veterans organization of your choice in Bill’s name.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Serenity Funeral Home of Southern Utah, 435-986-2085.

Our loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband, brother and friend Walt Wintch passed peacefully away at home on Jan. 5, 2019 after an eight-month, hard-fought battle with cancer.

Walt was born in Manti, Utah, on Feb. 8, 1935, to Ardray and Pearl Bessey Wintch. He married his sweetheart, Darlene Loraine Solo, in Salt Lake City, Jan. 28, 1954. They are parents of four children: Cheryl Hyland (Mike), Tammie Sadler (Stan), Rona DeMille (Kirk), Charles (Chip) Walter Wintch Jr. (Shaneen), nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Walt loved the Manti mountains, specifically 6 mile canyon, where his family camped, hunted and fished. He also loved a good campfire and with a twinkle in his eye and that deep voice, he told endless stories that entertained his family and friends.

Per Walt’s wish, no services will be held.

Oct. 20, 1937 – Jan. 3, 2019

Earl Bud Barney was led away from this earthly life and on to eternal life on Jan. 3, 2019, at the age of 81. He joined his wife Gloria, his mom Lula Morgan, dad Irvin Barney and his three brothers Dan, Jim and Darryl.

Earl, or Bud as many called him, was born on Oct. 20, 1937, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He grew up in Virgin, Utah, and graduated from Hurricane High in 1955. He met and married Gloria Leavitt in 1957. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on Jan. 11, 1966.

He became a brick mason at a young age and worked for Leavitt and Pulsipher Masonry until he became a masonry contractor of his own company. Earl was ambitious and driven to succeed in his trade.

He was known for being honest and a master of his trade. His work showed that he believed his name and the quality of his work were important. He demanded perfection from those who worked for him and from himself. He was capable of solving difficult problems and those who worked with him were proud to be associated with him. He was in high demand because those in the business knew that he would give them quality work in a timely manner. He built homes, churches, schools and many large business buildings. His handiwork is on display all over Southern Utah.

He lived a life filled with integrity, hard work and love. He was a man of few words and he communicated very effectively by just giving “the look,” but when he spoke people listened.

Earl was a master woodturner and made many beautiful bowls for family and friends.

He loved the outdoors, hunting, riding dirt bikes, water skiing at Lake Powell and snow skiing at Brian Head. Earl and his family spent many days camping on Cedar Mountain, on Sheep Bridge and Smith Mesa. He was athletic and picked up snow skiing and scuba diving in his later years.

He has left a great legacy and example for his family to follow.

April 18, 1944 – Jan. 9, 2019

Richard Antone Burningham, our amazing husband, father, grandfather and brother died suddenly Jan. 9, 2019, in St. George, Utah.

He was born April 18, 1944, in Ogden, Utah, to Cecil and Ethel Burningham. He was the seventh of 10 children and his mother often referred to her handsome son saying he was far “too pretty for a boy.”

Richard frequently shared a memory from his childhood that when his family got down to two flavors of ice cream in the house he insisted that his parents go to the store for more flavors! While growing up, he always treasured one-on-one time with his father, even if it required lengthy trips driving 50 miles out of town.

He served a full-time LDS mission in Copenhagen, Denmark. Then, from 1967-1968 he served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Because of his military service, his name will be engraved on the Veteran’s Memorial Monument at Tonaquint Cemetery in St George, Utah.

Shortly after returning home from service, he met Vickie Henrie in Southern California and was married for 30 years. They had four children together: Lorraine (Ben) Roach, Glen Burningham, Diane (Haldon) Johnson, and Doug (Angie) Burningham.

From an early age, he had a talent for fixing things, which led to a career in construction. Some of his projects included remodeling a school, working on church buildings, building houses with brothers-in-law and restoring the St. George Opera House. He also trained in architecture as a draftsman, which he loved doing. He was always known for his hard work and as the best handyman for anything!

In 2011, he swept Susan Pectol off her feet and was remarried, adding seven adult children to his family: Jeffrey (Anna) Pectol, John (Trisha) Pectol, Mike (Helen) Pectol, Rebekah Pectol, Matt (Leigh) Pectol, Shelly (Daniel) Reber, and Daniel Pectol. This union boasts of 36 grandchildren who he spoiled, teased and loved to pieces. He always said “family first” and cherished every moment with his grandkids. One of his favorite activities was the card game, Canasta. Many friends and family members cherish fond memories of a great, competitive game with Richard.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, 10 children, 36 grandchildren and three siblings: LaWana Marrs, Bob (Sali) Burningham, and Gary (Karen) Burningham. He was preceded in death by his parents Cecil and Ethel Burningham, son Joseph Glen Burningham, and six siblings: Dale Burningham, Lorraine Torbett, Dorothy Snyder, Rodney Burningham, Sherry Callahan and Fred Burningham.
