July 8, 1973 — January 12, 2017

Nathan Day Boone, 43, passed away on Jan. 12, 2017, in a tragic car accident. He was born in Provo, Utah, on July 8, 1973, the fifth of nine children, to his loving parents, Joseph Flake and Alisyn Day Boone. He married the love of his life, Julia Emily Martindale, on July 2, 2002, in the Mount Timpanogos Utah LDS Temple, and is the proud father of five amazing children.

Nathan will be remembered for his genuine caring nature, his boundless and contagious love for life, his competitive spirit, his infinite selflessness, being an avid BYU Cougar fan, and his jug of water. He was extremely thoughtful and generous, always loved a challenge, and was a hard worker. He enjoyed life to the fullest, and everything he touched grew. He was a kid at heart and made everything fun. Family was Nathan’s everything. He was a committed and dedicated husband and father. Playing with his children was his favorite thing. He went above and beyond to show his family how much he loved each of them. He was their coach, their mentor, their best friend, their rock, and their world.

He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission in the Argentina Córdoba Mission. He had a burning testimony of the restored Gospel and strived, in every way, to follow the example of Jesus Christ. He served enthusiastically in callings from Bishop to Primary Teacher, his all-time favorite.

Nathan’s love for people carried into his profession as a physical therapist. He cared deeply for his many patients spread across Southern Utah for whom he would travel great distances to help. He was touched by them as much as they were by him. He truly loved what he did.

Nathan will be remembered and cherished by his sweet wife Julia; their five beautiful children: Brooklyn (12), Courtney (9), Ty (7), Max (4), and Sage (2); his parents Joseph and Alisyn Boone; his eight siblings, Mary McDaniel (John), Taylor (Melissa), Adam, Sarah Reed (Scott), Kimball (Meijken), David (Allison), Barbara Sampson (Aared), and James (Abby); and Julia’s parents, Douglas and Maureen Martindale.

Scott Ottley

July 30, 1955 — January 18, 2017

Our beloved brother, Scott Arthur Ottley, 61, passed away in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2017, after a hard-fought battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis “ALS.”  He was born July 30, 1955, to Conrad and L. Peggie Hawkins Ottley in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Scott was a very devoted father to his beautiful daughter, Vanessa, the greatest joy in and pride of his life.  He was also a great uncle to his many nieces and nephews, always inquiring at great lengths about their schooling and activities. Anyone who knew Scott knows that he always kept himself in the best shape and maintained his body with strict diet and exercise. He loved to cycle and run, and spend time outdoors. There is not a park in St. George that he and Vanessa have not visited and enjoyed.

Scott had an exceptional work ethic, starting at a very early age working at our grandfather’s grocery store and had saved enough money to buy his first car on his 16th birthday. He owned his own landscaping company and then sold high-end audio equipment for several years. He eventually found his professional calling of selling real estate, beginning in Salt Lake with Probe Realtors and then in St. George for the last many years with Prudential and then RE/MAX. His nickname was “Realtor on the Run” because he always maintained such a hectic pace and worked so hard to service his clients. While in Salt Lake, he sold homes to several Utah Jazz players and would attend all of the Jazz home games as their guest, eating dinner with the players and their families.

Scott has enjoyed many lifelong friends and many friends he has made throughout his career in the real estate industry. They meant the world to him and were a great source of support throughout his life.

We would like to thank all of Scott’s caregivers as he battled against ALS. The care, patience, and compassion they showed for him was truly amazing. In lieu of flowers, Scott has requested that a donation be made to the ALS Association.

Scott his survived by his daughter, Vanessa; father, Larry L. Hawkins; brothers: Christopher C. Ottley and Jonathan L. Hawkins; and sister, Stacee A. Mitchell, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his mother, L. Peggie Hawkins, and sister, Carrie L. Fairbourn.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, our beloved mother, VeLois Nielson Carbine, slipped peacefully away at her home in Santa Clara, Utah, surrounded by her daughters.

She was born and raised in Manti, Utah, the fourth daughter and seventh child of John Rudolph Nielson and Alice Johnson Nielson.

VeLois graduated from Manti High School and earned an Associate of Arts degree from Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, where she became Dean of Women. She then earned a bachelor’s degree in education with a minor in music from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

After 18 years in Anaheim, California, they retired to Southern Utah where they enjoyed views of the red mountains for the last 20-plus years.

February 20, 1925 — January 25, 2017

Irene McGee Despain, beloved mother and grandmother passed away the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017, in St. George, Utah, at the age of 91.

Irene lived a long life of dedication to her family and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was known as a fastidious homemaker and seamstress, a loyal friend with a subtle yet sharp sense of humor, and a dedicated and faithful member of her church, serving in countless callings.

Irene was born in St. George, Utah, on Feb. 20, 1925, to Ross and Elsie Gifford McGee. When she was three years old her family moved to Draper, and at the age of 13, moved to Granite, Utah.

It was while living in Granite that she met Ward, the love of her life, at the old LDS church. Their life together was a classic love story. Legend has it Ward arrived a little late to sacrament meeting that fateful day, saw Irene’s beautiful red hair shining in the sunlight near the front of the chapel, and declared that she was the girl he was going to marry someday, without having yet seen her face.

Ward and Irene were married toward the end of her senior year in high school and were inseparable from that day forward, only spending time apart when Ward served in World War II. As Ward struggled with Alzheimer’s during the last years of his life, Irene stayed dedicatedly by his side, caring for him even as she struggled with her own health.

During nearly 70 years of marriage together, Irene and Ward shared many wonderful adventures, most of which were centered diligently on their church service. They were tour guides for large groups in the Middle East and Europe, as well as a LDS church history tour through the Eastern United States.

They moved several times for educational and career pursuits while raising their young family and finally settled in St. George which they would call home for almost 50 years.

They left their home for Hilo, Hawaii, from 1983 to 1987 for four wonderful years of service until Ward retired from the LDS church education system. When they returned to St. George, they continued their church service for another 15 years as temple workers, a period of time that they cherished and made many new friends.

Irene is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann (Terry) Blackburn and her two sons: Steven (Evelyn) and David (Shelly); 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

June 30, 1925 — January 28, 2017

Marjorie Nilsson Metcalf, age 91, passed away during the early evening of Jan. 28, 2017, with several family members at her side. She was born on June 30, 1925, in Salt Lake City to Mary Emma Nicholls and Nils Peter Nilsson. During her childhood, she lived at 1146 Laird Avenue, Salt Lake City. She attended Emerson Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High School and graduated from East High School in 1942.

Marjorie enrolled in LDS Business College after high school and received enough credits for an employment opportunity with Cloverleaf Dairy. One of her duties was to organize and write a monthly newsletter for current employees and for servicemen who were former employees. Her college sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, was engaged in multiple social activities in support of the servicemen. Though her mother raised an eye of caution, Marjorie prevailed saying her work was part of the war effort and that all dances and social activities were attended with chaperones. She met and corresponded with several servicemen including Farrel Metcalf. They first met at a dance at Kearns Air Force Base which her mother did not want her to attend. Farrel won her heart and her mother’s heart and they were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 18, 1946.

Marjorie and Farrel shared a good sense of humor and a strong consideration for the welfare of others and strove to pass these characteristics to their posterity. After marriage and raising six children, she returned to school and received her Bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University.

Marjorie worked for Western Equipment Company in Idaho Falls and then for the 7th District Health Department. She enjoyed her home life and made it her castle, organized in every detail, completed with meaningful artwork, home décor and accessories. Her kitchen was always filled with wonderful aromas where she produced delicious meals, appetizers and desserts. Many of the skills she developed, she attributed to the good training she received from her Swedish grandmother.

Marjorie and Farrel made many friends in Idaho Falls and were active with dinner groups, block parties, ward campouts and other social events. In 2000, they decided to move to St. George for better weather and to have equal distance between her children in California and Utah. Paul (Texas) and Mike (Washington) had to fend for themselves.  They made many friends in their Padre Lakes neighborhood of Ivins, Utah. In July 2015, Marjorie moved to The Retreat at Sun Brook, an assisted living facility in St. George. She so appreciated the friends she made there and the great care she received from the facility employees.

Always active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in many positions, including Sunday school teacher, Relief Society President, YWMIA stake board member. She was a member of her stake’s public affairs committee, a calling she particularly enjoyed because of the interaction between the LDS church and other religious denominations in the community. She and Farrel served as temple workers in the Los Angeles and Idaho Falls temples, missionaries in the Corpus Christi, Texas Mission, and later at the Idaho Falls Visitor’s Center. They attended and served in the Idaho Falls 10th, 17th, Ammon 11th  Ivins Red Cliffs 8th and the St. George 3rd wards.

One of the delights of her life was travel. She and Farrel loved camping and hiking, starting with a pup tent, then several tent trailers, then 5th wheel trailers. Their excursions from Idaho Falls included Palisades reservoir, Jackson Valley and the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Challis Salmon, northern Idaho, Montana, much of the western United States, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii. She traveled to Scandinavia, Portugal and Spain, Israel and much of Western Europe. When asked for advice by one of her newly married grandsons, she said, “Travel as much as you can.”

Marjorie is survived by her loving sister, Maureen Houghton, her six children: Michael (Katie), Steven (Kathy), Dave (Pamela), Mary Ann (Kerry) Strand, Chad, and Paul (Karina).  There are 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, with one on the way. She was preceded in death by her husband, Farrel, her daughter-in-law, Sandy (Steven), her sister Marian, and brothers: Edward and John. A wonderful homemaker, an excellent secretary, a devoted church server, a loving mother and grandmother and an amazing sister; she will be sorely missed.

August 26, 1927 — January 28, 2017

Leland J Frei, 89, was welcomed home into the arms of his loving wife and daughter on Jan. 28, 2017. He passed away of age-related causes. Lee was born Aug. 26, 1927, the fourth of six boys born to J. Claude and Leda Hafen Frei in Santa Clara, Utah; where, with the exception of a couple of years, he has lived all his life.

The old ways of Santa Clara and his roots were very important to him. Lee married Karen Rose Cannon on Oct. 5, 1955. He helped his dad and brothers as they raised produce, planting, picking and selling in the fruit stands that used to line old Hwy 91 through town. He raised hay, oats for silage, cattle and most importantly five children. They worked with him and he taught them how to work and work hard. His children knew he loved them. Lee started driving truck for Rocky Mountain Produce at a very young age; he later drove for Milne Truck Lines for 35 years. He drove truck for his livelihood and to support his family but after he retired he really went to work, farming and ranching full time with his brothers, something he loved and had always wanted to do. He loved the meadow at Panguitch Lake where the cows grazed in the summers and the Dutchman’s Ranch where they gathered their cattle in the fall. He was loyal to his family and was known as a hard worker.

Lee is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, wife and daughter Patti: He is survived by his children: Allen Lee (Jeannette), Laurie Rosaschi (Dale), Jayne Mock (Kevin), Jerry Clare (Barb); grandchildren: Klinton Allen Frei, Lyndi Frei Ison, Kyler Lee Frei, Jacob Clare Frei, Jordan Lee Mock, Rachel Lynn Frei, Kamryn Mock, Shad Lee Rosaschi, Lydia Dawn Frei, Jedadiah Clay Frei, Josiah Lee Frei; and eight great-grandchildren.

Alene Adams

November 29, 1929 — January 16, 2017

Alene Pendleton Adams, age 87, of St. George, Utah, our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many passed away peacefully in her home on Jan. 16, 2017, surrounded by members of her family. Alene was born on Nov. 29, 1929, in Washington, Utah, to Edna and Lorraine Pendleton.

Unlike most babies who are blessed in a church on Sunday, Alene was blessed in the middle of the street at the intersection of 200 East and 200 North in Washington, Utah, on a weekday by a neighbor, Randolf Andrus, who gave her a blessing at the urgent request of her mother. Alene was choking and her mother thought she was going to choke to death. When he asked what the baby’s name was, the only name that came to her mind was “Alene.”  Consequently, she was named and blessed in the street that day. She related this story many times throughout her life to illustrate the power of priesthood blessings and the faith she had in them because when he finished the blessing, her normal breathing resumed.

Alene met David Klein Adams at a dance at the old Rec Hall next to the Tabernacle. He and his brother, Jack, had moved to St. George from Orem to start a tomato farm. It was love at first sight and they were married in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 10, 1947. She was 17 and Klein was 23. They were sealed 30 years later in the St. George LDS Temple on Aug. 24, 1977. Alene wholeheartedly devoted herself to her family from the day she was married and was determined to be the best mother she could be.

When she and Klein went into the mobile home and RV sales business, she found her niche in business and became a top-notch saleswoman. After her four children were married, she and her two daughters, Pennee and Angie, started Boulevard Bridal and Prom and Mr. Tux in the Boulevard West Mall. Alene really enjoyed helping girls choose the perfect prom or wedding dress. She also enjoyed helping young men coordinate their tuxes with accessories that matched the dresses of their dates. She was personable and patient, and everyone liked working with her.

She had many talents, but playing the piano and organ were her two favorite. In the past, she was active in the Lady Lions Club and has served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a primary teacher many times. Alene was quick-witted and liked to make people laugh. Alene had hundreds of clichés her grandmother taught her. She, in turn, taught them to her children and grandchildren; and they have become one of her legacies. “If there’s a will, there’s a way,” was one she used as a guide in her life. She tackled every obstacle with determination and a lot of will power. She usually came out victorious. Conquering death will undoubtedly be viewed by her as the icing on the cake, as she will be reunited with the love of her life. She grieved for 3 long years after his passing.

Alene was preceded in death by her husband, David Klein Adams; her brother, Theo Lytel Pendleton; her mother, Edna Harris; grandparents, Margie and Hyrum Turnbeaugh; and grandsons, Shaun Rickie Adams and Josh Rickie Adams.

She is survived by her four children: Pamela “Pennee” Suesett (Holger) Kirchhausen, Rickie Klein (Cheryl) Adams, Jeffrey David (Elizabeth) Adams, and Angaleza Adams; 16 grandchildren: Heinz (Angie) Kirchhausen, Keesha (Eric) McPherson, Kammee (Jim) Plant, Kynzee (Ryan) Barton, Krizia (Houman) Katoozi, Hans (Amelia) Kirchhausen, Jessica (Derek) McAllister, Jordan (Karlee) Adams, Emily (Casey) Blais, Aaron Adams, Melissa (Wessley) Musso, Christian Adams, Alexia (Cary) Decker, Acacia Adams, Breitton Adams and Angillesa Adams; and 32 precious great-grandchildren.
