Marjorie Marsden HeyborneApril 30, 1923 — June 1, 2016

Surrounded by her family, Marjorie Marsden Heyborne, age 93, passed away at home in St. George, Utah, on June 1. She was born on April 30, 1923, in St. George, Utah, to Arvilla Connell and Lucius Nelson Marsden. She was married to the love of her life, Rulon “Rick” Heyborne, on Oct. 21, 1953. She had three children; her first child, Michael, passed away of complications shortly after birth.

She spent her early childhood years in Parowan, later moving to Cedar City with her family. She attended the Branch Agricultural College in Cedar City, Utah; the Agricultural College in Logan, Utah; and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She entered the business world working in her father’s clothing store, Marsden’s Men’s Wear, and as a young woman she spent a summer working at the lodge on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. She also worked for the telephone company and as secretary to the chairman of the State Liquor Commission.

She enjoyed traveling and visited many areas of the country. She also took flying lessons and loved doing maneuvers and stalls. She moved to San Francisco to work in her early 20s but later returned home to help take care of her family as her mother was ailing. It was then she met and married Rulon, who had also recently returned to Cedar City from Los Angeles. They moved to Salt Lake City in 1963 where she had a long career with the food brokerage firm Mancini and Groesbeck as office manager. She loved to sing and was a member of the Salt Lake Oratorio Society for many years, performing Handel’s “Messiah” each Christmas.

As a young woman, she was offered the chance to move to New York City to study dance and voice but choose to stay close to her family. It was always a joy to see her dance the Charleston, which she did often at the request of her children. Her loud whistle was always impressive, and it was used as needed to call children home for supper or just to let them show off to their friends. Even though she was scared of the water, she enjoyed many years of boating with the family, Lake Powell being a favorite spot. In 1989, she moved to St. George, where she and Rulon retired.  She was an avid Bridge player and won several medals playing in the Huntsman games. She loved the St. George area and had many friends there.Marjorie Marsden Heyborne2

The thing that made her happiest was seeing her family safe, comfortable, fed and happy. When asked her secret for raising children, her answer was simple: “Everything you do, do it with love.” That is how she lived her life.

Richard LaMar JonesOct. 6, 1951 — June 14, 2016

Richard LaMar Jones, 64, passed away June 14. He was born Oct. 6, 1951, in Milford, Utah, to Richard Leon Jones and Audra Bradshaw Jones. He was born the youngest child and was adored by his entire family.

LaMar graduated from Milford High School in 1969. He then entered the Utah National Guard where he served for 6 years. He married his high school sweetheart, Karen Marie Pipher, in 1970.

He worked as a millwright for many years but considered his work at Caliente Youth Center as his real calling in life. He was a mentor to so many and affected the lives of all those around him.

He was a strong and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was always sharing his testimony and believed there were tender mercies in his life. He served in many callings but loved working with the youth the most.

He loved fishing, hunting and being in any mountains, especially the Beavers. He was a Dutch oven master and loved sharing these skills with others. He always had the best stories to tell that had everyone laughing and also the kind of spiritual stories that would bring you to tears.

He was humble, smart, kind, selfless and one of the funniest people you would ever meet. He was a spiritual giant and a great example to those he knew. He was faithful to the end and looking forward to seeing his sweet parents and siblings again. He knew there would be a loving reunion in Heaven.

He is survived by his children: Richard LaMar Jones Jr of Cedar City, Utah; AnaLisa (Bryan) Jackson of Caliente, Nevada; and Chelsea (Nick) Holt of Washington, Utah; seven grandchildren; one brother; and three sisters.

Max RoseDec. 30, 1944 — June 17, 2016

Max Henry Rose, age 71, passed away at his home in St. George, Utah, on June 17, 2016. Max was born on Dec. 30, 1944, in Panguitch, Utah, as the third of 14 children, to David Quilter and Delpha Almira Johnson Rose. He lived most of his childhood and youth in Henrieville, Utah, near Bryce Canyon National Park.

As a young adult, Max served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Florida mission under Elder Glen L. Rudd. He returned to Southern Utah and graduated from Southern Utah University (then College of Southern Utah) in 1969 with a degree in math and secured a position at Los Alamos National Laboratories, a position he never filled because of a teaching opportunity that became available at SUU at about the same time. This choice to devote his career to teaching turned out to be a defining one in Max’s life.

A second defining choice was his marriage in the St. George Temple that same year, April 25, 1969, to Kathryn Ann Duncan, who would become his eternal companion. Together, Max and Kathy went to Logan, Utah, where Max earned a Master’s degree at Utah State University. Later, he would earn a doctorate degree from Brigham Young University.

Max started his teaching career at Dixie State University (then Dixie College) in 1972, where he excelled at teaching and was a much-beloved teacher of math and chemistry courses. He later accepted a position as Vice President of Academic Affairs at Dixie, a position he held until becoming the Washington County School Superintendent in 2003.

Max served in many capacities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, both in his residential ward and among the students in the college stake, most notably serving as Stake President of the Dixie College Stake from 1987 to 1992.

An engaging and inspiring speaker, Max was highly sought after to make presentations for church and civic groups.  He also received many awards for his teaching and service contributions.

Over his life, Max used his incisive intelligence, extraordinary wit, cheerful, optimistic disposition and warm, charismatic personality to teach, counsel and positively influence countless individuals.

He is survived by his adoring family: wife, Kathryn; son, Tyler (Francesca) Rose; daughter, Jennifer Rose; daughter, Marchelle (Samuel) Tobler; son, Nathan Rose; mother, Delpha; 11 brothers and sisters; and nine grandchildren.
