Quinten EnceMay 21, 1937 — April 9, 2016

Quentin Chan Ence, 78, passed away in an auto accident in Enterprise, Utah, while returning from working on his ranch, April 9, 2016.  He was born in Ivins on May 21, 1937, to Ernest Reuben Ence and Mata Gubler Ence. He married his high school sweetheart, Sylvia Ann Cox Ence on January 13, 1956, and was later sealed with his family in the St. George Temple on September 1, 1979. They had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Born to parents who pioneered Ivins, Quentin was proud of his Swiss heritage.

In his words, “I have a great heritage. The Ence name is a great and honest name . . . I want to leave my posterity a feeling for the heritage that is theirs.”

Quentin was born in Ivins and currently resided in Ivins — for him, his life had come full circle. Family was very important to him; Quentin and his brothers, Jay and Floyd, were inseparable.

Working, in general, was important to Quentin — which was evidenced in his wide variety of work.  He went from agricultural work, to ranching, to a fruit-stand, to working at the Mercury Test Site (during the atomic bomb testing), to truck driving, to hauling hay and grain, to opening a feed mill, and, finally, to building, developing, and construction. Quentin and Jay helped build the largest construction company in Southern Utah, introducing innovations like water features and palm trees. Their business, Ence Homes, helped change Southern Utah into the thriving community it is today.

But, Quentin was truly a farmer-rancher at heart. After retiring, he went back to ranching — fulfilling his dream of building a farm like his dad.

He loved anything to do with being outdoors: hunting, fishing, flying (airplanes and helicopters), boating, houseboating at Lake Powell, hunting, Dutch oven cooking and snowmobiling.  He had a great love for the “Red Mountain” and his home-away-from-home at Mountain Meadows. He also had a great love for animals — especially cows, horses and dogs. He had a very special attachment to each of his dogs.

Quentin loved watching his kids and grandkids play sports. He orchestrated family houseboat trips to Lake Powell and enjoyed family projects like thinning peaches and putting up corn. He especially enjoyed carrying on a tradition of his father’s, being Santa Clause on Christmas morning, something he did not only for his kids and grandkids, but for so many others in the community.

In his own words to his family: “What great kids I have. They have brought me joy and happiness. To be able to work with all of them has been a wonderful experience.”

Besides his family, perhaps the most important work Quentin did was his service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held many leadership positions in the church and was able to help a lot of people. He was able to serve a mission with his wife, Sylvia, in Australia. When they returned, he enjoyed serving in the temple with her.

Quentin also loved helping in the community. He and Jay built the Dove Center and Jubilee House, along with other community projects. He enjoyed donating to the Jubilee of Trees each year. He also proudly served his country for many years in the Utah Army National Guard.

In Quentin’s words, “I have lived a full and happy life . . . I have tried to hold true to the values my parents taught me and I pray my posterity holds true to these same values. My cup is full. I have had a great life.”

He is preceded in death by his parents, Reuben and Mata Ence; his brothers Dilworth and Floyd; and his sisters Lillis Spencer and Pauline Olds. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; his brother Jay (Janice) Ence; his children, Kim, Tracy (Leslie), Russ (Lisa), Terese Mangum (Ken), Troy (LaNae), Jon (Alexis); 17 grandchildren; and, 11 great-grandchildren.

John was born November 22, 1917, in a simple log home with sod roof in Lorenzo, Idaho, to Daniel Hollyman Coles and Lilley Gange. He was the fourth of five children. His siblings include Lola Coles Tibbetts, Milton Coles, Julian Coles, and Bernice Coles Hathaway. It was on the family farm he learned the value of hard work.  Likely hot summer days in the hay field also taught him the value of an education.  He graduated from Rigby (Idaho) High School.

As World War II began John enlisted in the Army Air Corp attending flight school in Santa Maria, California. He became a navigator stationed in Long Beach, California, where he met Bettie F. Brunt of Idaho Falls, Idaho. They were married in the Logan Temple, on July 20, 1943.  During the war he served in the Pacific Theatre. He was in the squadron of five aircraft carrying General Douglas MacArthur to oversee the Japanese surrender.

After the war, John studied at the University of California, Berkley, completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering.  He then was admitted to John’s Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, Maryland. During his career the Coles family lived in San Antonio, Texas; Cheyenne, Wyoming; Anchorage, Alaska; Gulfport, Mississippi; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Riverside, California. After leaving the Air Force he began private practice in Riverside, then Patton State Hospital and March Air Base. John and Bettie moved to St. George, Utah, in 1998 where they lived happily for 15 years.

John’s life was accentuated by service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; serving as Bishop’s Counselor, Stake High Councilor, Bishop (twice), and Stake Patriarch.

Parker Brennan WoodDec. 4, 2004 — April 22, 2016

Our angel boy, Parker Brennan Wood, was called home by his Heavenly Father after having fulfilled his mission on this earth. While his body was weak, his spirit was strong, and our family was blessed by him every day. He taught us to be patient and selfless. He taught us to be strong and brave. He taught us to love all of God’s children and appreciate the world around us.

Parker loved kisses and snuggles. He loved Dum-Dum suckers and tapioca pudding. He loved going to school and his buddy, Miss Alysse. He had the best buzz haircut around, and his smile could melt your heart!

Parker underwent major orthopedic surgery on his back at Primary Children’s Hospital in March of this year. He came home and celebrated Easter with his brother and sisters, soaked in some springtime sunshine and convalesced in the comfort of his home and family.

Two weeks into his recovery, an infection was discovered in his back. He and his Mom spent three weeks at Primary Children’s fighting through more surgery, pain and complications. Finally, on April 22, his lungs and heart could endure no more. He passed away peacefully in the arms of his Grandmas while they sang in his ear and stroked his cheeks.

As a family, we believe that Parker’s life on this earth was only a moment in his eternal progression. He was limited by his earthly body, but now he is free! We love our sweet brother, and saying goodbye has been harder than we could have imagined. However, we know that we will be reunited again, and when the day comes, we will run to each other and embrace like we were never able to do in this life.

Parker is survived by his parents, Brennan and Sandi Wood; his siblings, Cambridge, Addison and Beckett of Cedar City; his Grandparents Marlowe and DeAnne Wood of North Salt Lake and Grandparents J. Ramsey and Kathie Gibson of Cedar City; and Great Grandparents Dee and Ruth Anne Hymas of American Fork. Parker has many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who love him deeply and will miss him greatly.

A special thank you to the staff at Primary Children’s Hospital for their care and sensitivity to Parker and our family!  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Primary Children’s.

Ed Baumgarten2February 16, 1926 — April 27, 2016

Edward (Ed) Julius Baumgarten, 90, passed away April 27, 2016, at the Retreat at Sunbrook, Assisted Living Facility, St. George, Utah.

Ed was born in Oakland, California, on February 16, 1926. He was the second of four sons born to Shirley Nielene Rose Mortenson and Leon Otto Baumgarten.  When he was a junior in high school he received his draft notice and was sent by bus to an induction center.  His parents expected him to be back by supper because he had suffered from asthma since childhood.  But no one asked about asthma and he didn’t tell.

When basic training was over, he volunteered for rigorous paratroop training. At the end of the first stage of training all the men who came with him from basic training had quit except one. Ed was assigned to the 511th regiment of the Eleventh Airborne Division.

Ed saw combat in the Philippines and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on Luzon. His division was scheduled to make the first parachute landing on Japan, but because atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, those orders were never issued.

Following his honorable release from the Army, Ed returned home to receive his High School degree, serve an LDS mission in the Western States Mission, and attend Brigham Young University. At BYU he sang in the traveling Delta Phi choir, majored in marketing and met the love of his life.

Ed married LaRue Nielson on May 29, 1952, in the Manti, Utah, Temple. The next week they both graduated from BYU and then headed south to Arizona where they would live for the next 32 years.  Ed worked for Sears in Mesa, Arizona, and managed stores in Chandler and Douglas, Arizona.

Six children are privileged to call Ed and LaRue mom and dad: Patricia Ann Johnson (Auburn, California), Susan LaRue Wagner (Modesto, California), Julie McGary (St. George), Nancy May (Phoenix, Arizona), Daniel Edward Baumgarten Ed Baumgarten(Littleton, California) and Victor Adin Baumgarten (St. George). Twenty-six grandchildren and thirty-six great-grandchildren (and more on the way!) are included in the family Ed and LaRue treasured above all else.

In 1985, after retiring from Sears, the couple moved to St. George, Utah, and settled in Bloomington Hills. Ed sold real estate, organized Sunland Investments, served on the board of directors and as president of Dixie Escalante Rural Electric Association.  In 1995 Ed and LaRue accepted a call to serve in the Florida, Tallahassee Mission.

Ed found joy in serving other people.  He was instrumental in getting the Veteran’s Nursing Home located in Ivins, Utah, and he served as an ordinance worker in the St. George Temple. His leadership roles in the LDS church impacted countless lives for good.

One word that summarizes Ed is love. Love of his God, his country, his sweetheart, his family, his ward members, his neighbors, his fellow human beings and love of life!  And in return, he is dearly loved by all who knew him.

Funeral Services

  • A celebration of his remarkable life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2016, at the Bloomington Hills 3rd Ward Chapel, 1222 E. Brigham Rd,  St. George, Utah.
  • A visitation will be held Saturday prior to service from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the chapel.
  • Interment will be at the Toniquint Cemetery.

To honor Ed, donations may be made in his name to the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation.  Checks can be mailed to 7008 Little River Turnpike, PO Box 49, Annandale, VA, 22003.  Credit card payment can be made at www.purpleheartfoundation.org/donate.

The family thanks Ed’s medical providers and the staff at the Retreat for their professional and loving care.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, 435-673-4221.

Richard MelloJanuary 22, 1934 — April 23, 2016

Richard Mello, 82, passed away on April 23, 2016, in St. George, Utah. He was born January 22, 1934, in Fall River, Massachusetts, across the river from where his parents lived in Rhode Island.

Richard joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict when he was 17 years old. Before Richard left the Navy, just before his 21st birthday, he met his first wife, Jackie. They had two beautiful children, a boy Richard “Rick” (Kelly) and daughter Laurie Ann. They later divorced. Richard met his second wife, Jean, who was also from Rhode Island. Richard and Jean left Rhode Island to live in California. They also had two beautiful children, two sons, Daniel (Nancy) and Timothy (Karen). Jean passed away in 2003. Richard was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he dearly loved.

Through the years Richard spent time in Rhode Island, California and Florida.

Richard and Jean took early retirement and traveled the country in their motorhome and ended up in St. George.

A couple of years after Jean passed away Richard met, Diane, also a widow. They have spent the last 10 years together.

Richard was a camp host at Red Cliffs Camp Ground. He started working at Sky Mountain Golf Course in Hurricane, right after it opened. He felt so blessed to work with Kent, the Golf Pro, and all the wonderful people that work there. Richard also felt blessed to have loving relationships with his golf buddies. Richard felt and said they were all a second family to him. When Richard wasn’t golfing he would go fishing if the weather was nice.

On March 9, 2016, he found out that he had lung cancer and it was spreading. The cancer won.

The family cannot say enough about all the loving care Richard received from Dr. Ryan Wilcox and his lovely staff members at South West Regional Cancer Clinic. They would also like to thank Sheila Gwinn, the Oncology Nurse Navigator, for all she has done for Richard, the loving staff members at Intermountain Dixie Regional Medical Center, and Zion Way Home Health Care and their lovely staff.

Ruth LeavittNov. 28, 1937 — April 26, 2016

Ruth Zohner Leavitt, a woman of exceeding faith and exceptional love, returned to her heavenly home on April 26.

Ruth was born Nov. 28, 1934, in St. George, Utah. She was the third child of John Henry and Nina Lemmon Zohner. Ruth loved her five siblings dearly and remained in close contact with Dahl, Jerry, David, Elna and Tonia throughout her life.  She was named in memory of Nina’s beloved younger sister who passed away when Nina was 16.

Ruth enjoyed a close and loving relationship with her Lemmon relatives, especially her grandparents, David William and Rozett Gifford Lemmon. Their strength and living testimonies of the Gospel of Jesus Christ were foundational in the development of her own rock-solid testimony of the Savior. Ruth’s testimony led her to a lifetime of activity in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and unceasing service to church and family.

Ruth married Lloyd McArthur Leavitt on Sept. 21, 1950, in the St. George LDS Temple. They have enjoyed more than 65 years of adventure together and find hope and peace in the promise of an eternity of wedded bliss. They are the parents of 12 children: Jeri (Scott), Sheila (Ray), Lem (Laura), Cynthia, Lisa (Rob), Amy (Richard), Eva, Valerie, Luke (Diana), Florence (Phil), Abigail and Bradley (Emma). They have 43 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.

Ruth considered the raising of her family to be her greatest accomplishment and was especially grateful for the blessing of caring for Cynthia, whose special needs brought an extra measure of love, learning and joy into her family.

Ruth was skilled, intelligent and hardworking. She was employed by the Church Physical Facilities Department for over 30 years prior to her retirement in 1995. She was an avid reader, always seeking new information and learning how to use the latest technologies. Ruth Leavitt was loved tremendously and will be missed more than words can express.
