Malik Alfred Phillip Drye, 21, passed away on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2022. He was born Jan. 10, 2001, in St. George, Utah He attended schools in Moccasin and Fredonia, Arizona, until the eighth grade. He then attended Canyon View Middle School and went on to graduate in 2019 from Canyon View High School in Cedar City, Utah.
Malik loved all sports and worked hard to perfect his signature quick moves. He might have been small, but he was a “dark horse” for many teams. He played baseball, football and four years of basketball for the Falcon family. He also played lacrosse with his brothers as the program was getting started in Southern Utah.
He valued all the hunting trips on the Kaibab Paiute Indian Reservations, where he was a tribal member. The Young Men’s program with the Iron Mission Branch “family” is where many good memories and bonds were made. He loved his leaders.
He then worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs on the camp crew for wildland firefighting with the Southern Paiute Agency. Malik loved a good prank and loved all his family so much. Malik was so proud to buy his first car and always wanted to look his best. But more importantly, Malik loved to help others. He was the first one to jump up and help when he saw anyone in need.
He is survived by his Cedar City parents Elton and Shoni John and the whole Tom Nation; his mothers Ona Segundo and Rose Bushead of Kaibab, Arizona; his brothers and sisters Wendell, Brandon, Jake, Tiara, Maria, Elli, Q, Kai, Sully, Oscar, Lettie, Montana (nephew), Nolan, Adriana, Sumie, James and Chris; his grandma Amelia Segundo; and aunts Jeri and Glenna.
He was preceded in death by his sister Belle, Grandpa H-man, Grandpa Ramona and Uncle Buzz (Brandon Petty).
Funeral services were held Dec. 30, 2022, with burial at Kaibab Paiute Cemetery.
Malik’s smile could light up the room and his mother and I are very blessed that we got to be a part of his life. Until we meet again son, soar with the eagles.
Donations may be made to the Give A Hand account that has been set up to help the family pay for some of the funeral expenses and headstone.
