Benedict Aloysius Smoody

Dec. 4, 1924-June 16, 2022

Benedict Aloysius Smoody (legal name Benny E. Smoody), age 97, peacefully passed away June 16, 2022, after a great life.  He was surrounded by a loving family at the time of his passing.

Benny was born Dec. 4, 1924, in Berlin, Wisconsin.  

He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Rokovsch, and father, Albert Smoody, of Berlin, Wisconsin. They were married during the early 1920s in Berlin, Wisconsin.

Benny lived in Berlin, Wisconsin.  He graduated high school, was raised Catholic and could speak Latin and Polish. He worked various jobs as a teenager and as a young man. One of his favorite stories included trading his Western Flyer bicycle for a Model A Ford.  

Benny was called to enlisted service in June 1944 during World War II. His active service of two years included fighting on the frontlines in Germany as a Bazooka gunner.  He received an Honorable Discharge in June 1946 as a private.

Benny met and married Neva Tyler of Highland Falls, Illinois, in 1948 and had three children.

He is survived by sons Michael and Richard and daughter Debra Ann. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  All family members live in various parts of the USA.

Benny moved to Saint George in 1970 and started a business called B&S Service Company. He ran this business for over 50 years in Southern Utah and surrounding areas.

Benny married Rosa Aguero Cantu in 1988.  They were married for numerous years. Together they had four children and raised a family together.

From this union, he is survived by his ex-wife Rosa, who has been a caring friend. Other surviving children include daughters Margarita and Neva, sons Joshua and Christian, son-in-law Chris and three  grandchildren.  

Benny will be missed by his family and friends.  He will be remembered for his sharp wit and caring for people that needed his help- all throughout his 97 years.

Direct burial service will be at Tonaquint Cemetery, 1777 Dixie Drive, St George, Utah, located in the Veteran’s Memorial area on Tuesday, June 21, at 9 am.

The family would like to thank Dixie Hospice Care for making Benny’s ending time at home with his family a peaceful one.
