November 30, 1926 – October 2, 2015
Our beloved sister, mother, aunt and grandmother, Ruby (Marie) Braithwaite Simmons, 88, passed away on October 2, 2015, in Cedar City. She was born November 30, 1926, in Dividend, Utah, which does not exist anymore, to Eugene and Ruby Lilly Schramm Braithwaite. She married Kenneth Paul Simmons Sr. in Las Vegas on November 21, 1955.
Marie grew up in Payson. After her high school graduation, she moved to Brigham City to work as a nurse’s aide. This is how she met her first husband, Richard Munson. They moved to Whittier, California, and had three children together. They later divorced.
She met and married Ken Simmons, and together they had one son. They lived in El Monte, California. During this time, Marie worked as an upholstery seamstress at Marge Carson Furniture. After retirement, they moved to Logandale, Nevada. After Ken passed, she moved to Cedar City.
She was amazingly talented and the best cook. Her rolls cannot be duplicated. She loved to oil paint, knit, crochet and sew everyone a quilt or two. She always had a project going. She was a very compassionate, loving woman. Everyone loved her, and she loved everyone. Marie was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. She was also blessed to work in the Las Vegas Temple.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter Peggy Lee Canterbury; son John Munson, grandson Tandon Brigham Canterbury, and her brother Glen Braithwaite.
She is survived by her son-in-law, Terry Canterbury; and his children, Tiffany (Thomas) Lund, Courtney (Heather) Canterbury, Terrace and Christian Canterbury; daughter Marty Ann Stalcup; and her children, Dustie (Mark) Perkinson and Misty (Roger) Fontaine; son Kenneth Paul (Debbie) Simmons; and their children, Jenifer (Kaluna) Aki, Samantha Blankenship, Nicole, Megan, Emily and Kenny Simmons; brother Don Braithwaite; sisters Anna Mae Alvari and Mary Lou Daley; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff of Kolob Care Center in Cedar City for their loving and compassionate long-term care. We would also like to thank Hannah, with Alliance Hospice, for spending the time to get to know Marie and love her in her last months.
